What is a double-hung window?
# FAQDouble-Hung windows have two panes of glass (sashes) which slide vertically within offset guides in the frame and utilise a spring and brake system which keeps each sash in the position that they are moved to.
We have several double-hung window series for residential and commercial applications, but if you are looking for a traditional aesthetic, you should consider the 613 Series Designer double-hung. Adding raised colonial-bars and lower federation horns, which are both options, will achieve the popular hamptons-style window look.
On this series, both window sashes can un-latch and tilt inwards or be completely removed to enable cleaning of both sides of the glass from inside. This functionality is is ideal for upper level windows and where fixed screens are used. 613 Series double-hung windows also have an integrated external channel to allow screens to be installed within the frame line for a clean, minimal look.
When choosing a double-hung window, consider these factors:
- Does the traditional look of double-hung windows suit your house design?
- Operating the sashes take more effort to operate than other window types since the brake system prevents the sash from dropping, there has to be a certain amount of resistance to suit the weight of the sash
- What is the height of your products?
- If your plans feature product heights that are 2.4m or more, this can cause issues when operating the double-hung window since the top sash must be able to moved to the top of the frame to engage the lock
- If you are unable to reach to the top of the upper sash where the lift handles are then you will have to shuffle the sash upwards until it stops
- You may also wish to consider sashless double-hung systems such as the ClearVENT or Aneeta's 2-Pane for a contemporary option with a counter-balance design for ease of operation
- The Designer and Commercial double-hung windows are generally more expensive than other comparable series, such as sliding or awning windows.
- This is partly due to the number of sections that make up the window and the additional labour in manufacturing
- Do you plan on using double-hung windows where Fall Prevention is a factor?
- If you are not going to use a fall prevention screen such as Kidscreen or Invisi-Gard then you will need to have restriction blocks fitted to limit the openings.
- Since double-hung windows seal to the frame and do not open outwards, room ventilation will be minimal if restriction blocks are used
- Federation Horns are not available in anodised frame finishes
- Make sure you compare the operation and features of the 613 Series (102mm frame depth) over the 514 Series (50mm frame depth) double-hung windows.
- Th 514 Series double-hung does not feature the tilt-in operation nor integrated screen channels
- The brake system design has smoother operation on the 613 Series
We believe it is important to weigh up each of these factors so that you can make an informed decision when choosing double-hung windows for your home
